Jonathon Hockley is a music business veteran who’s journey has taken him from the bedroom, to prime time radio, to being dropped from his own label, to a sustainable career. His journey has had many triumphs and failures. It strengthened and weakened his character but ultimately it has made him proficient at running a fulfilling career in the music industry.
If there is something Jon has taken away about being successful in music and life it’s these 3 truths
1. However great you are, know that you can always be greater.
2. Understand that success is increasing your usefulness to yourself and others
3. Money and Fame are a tool to save others, not yourself.
Jonathon Hockley entered the music industry at the age of 19 when he sold 800 vinyl copies of his first public single. This was 2001. He went on to get his first record deal in 2003 but they never released a record. Upset with the productivity of the record deal he set up his own label Vivid Imagery with partner DJ Maximus Real. They signed a few artists, one of which, Kasha Rae, went on to get signed by Tinie Tempah’s Disturbing London in 2012. Getting overwhelmed with business Jon returned to back production with an artist called Ashleigh Ashley who released her debut EP in 2015 and went on to secure a European tour.
Jon is now working with several artists on their debut material. In the last 16 years Jon has secured his own music on BBC Radio 1 several times, has a combined YouTube view count of over 1 Million. Worked with over 100 artists including Ed Sheeran, Katy B and Chase & Status, produced over 1000 records, shot several music videos, built a dozen websites (including this one), performed live, … and he still owns all his masters and his brand. All this has been achieved on his own hard earned money. He still has time to donate 1% of his income to charity and he is currently training for the Iron Man.
Fun fact, Jon can play the piano whilst balancing his whole body on one arm.
